A lifelong journey often begins with one or two small but significant moments which, when coupled with natural God-given gifts, brings forth ones destiny. This is just the case of what led Dr. Jorge L. Moreno, D.O. into the field of holistic medicine. As a child, a simple visit to the pediatrician planted the first seeds of practicing medicine in a young boy’s heart. Dr. Moreno recalls, “It was just a routine visit, nothing out of the ordinary was going on at the time. However the doctor was so honest, open and kind. She gave me a sense that she had an authentic interest in me. I left her office feeling so special and cared for.” As he grew, Dr. Moreno developed a genuine passion for helping people, and enjoyed the challenge of studying physiology and healing. As a senior in college, a second random event set him on the ultimate path toward osteopathy. “I was the president of Chicanos for Creative Medicine (a college pre-med club). I received a letter that had been sent to the prior president who had graduated the year before. The letter was from College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific, which later grew into Western University of Health Sciences. This letter contained information on their osteopathic program. It outlined the unique philosophies of osteopathy, and how the body can be supported through holistic means to encourage its own natural ability to heal. As I read the information, I was sure that I wanted to be an osteopathic physician. It was clear that it was a perfect fit…a perfect match with what I believe in.”
Upon graduating from High School, Dr. Moreno enrolled at Loyola Marymount University where he earned his Bachelor’s of Sciences in Biology in 1988, graduating Magna Cum Laude. He then attended Western University of Health Sciences, and was one of four, out of 140 medical students, who were accepted into the undergraduate teaching fellowship in Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine. This elite program afforded him the opportunity to practice more “hands on medicine”, work one-on-one with advanced mentors, perform research, and teach the 1st and 2nd year medical school students.
Between 1995 and 1998, Dr. Moreno completed a family practice residency at Downey Community Hospital, where he was promoted to chief resident in his final year. After that, he worked at Kaiser for a short time, and then joined the practice of a fellow osteopath in Santa Monica, California where he spent 10 years. As time went on, a desire grew within Dr. Moreno to work in a larger office with more space to accommodate additional holistic treatments and supplements; enable partnerships with outside specialists; and to serve his home community Greater Los Angeles area. In 2011, these desires led him to open the doors of his own osteopathic practice, Center for Wellness, in Montebello, CA.
